Want to know what Geeks are talking about? Here's
a clue!
- Gamer-Someone who plays a great deal of games. Originally used for role-players,
the term is used also for those who play computer games. Usually refers to
action/adventure role playing type games.
- Game Master-Usually used in role playing games, this person is the director of
the scenarios that the players are immersed in.
- Geekosphere-The area around a geek and their working environment. Includes
photos, posters, cups, office equipment, and of course, the obligatory post-it notes.
- Gofer-Usually a volunteer and often used regarding conventions. A person who
performs menial tasks and is asked to "go for" this
"go for"
that, etc.
- hacker -Someone who "breaks" into programming systems but is now also
used for someone who can manipulate programming even without breaking into another system.
Usually refers to someone that can circumvent the traditional ways to get the information
needed.
- Infonesia-When someone cant remember where they read of some information.
- Jedhead-A severe fan of the Star Wars movies.
- Jolt-A brand name drink that has lots of caffeine. Term is used to denote any
heavy caffeine, and usually sweet, drink that is used to get a quick energy boost.
- Lurker-Someone who visits newsgroups and message boards but doesnt
contribute. They "lurk" around without making their presence known.
- Mailbomb-When a large amount of people send mail to a single person or system in
an attempt to overload it.
- Manga-Japanese comic books. Usually very thick, almost phone book sized. The
manga in Japan covers all subjects and genres and has sales of over six billion dollars
annually.
- McJob-The type of job that most teens are forced to take which are usually low in
pay, prestige, dignity, benefits, and future. Most common is at McDonalds hence the
name.
- mecha -A term used for mechanical and usually refers to giant robots that are
controlled internally by human occupants. There is also a correlation of transforming
mechanical associated with mecha.
- Men in Black-Special government agents who cover up the various conspiracies such
as UFOs, secret technology development and the like.
- Multi-tasking-Either a person or equipment handling several different tasks
simultaneously.
- Nanotechnology-Although a technology in actual development, nanotechnology also
refers to the concept of incorporating microchip technology with biological processes.
- nephew art-The trend for executives to hire relatives (often a nephew) to handle
Internet functions in lieu of the company hiring an actual professional.
- net.god -Referring to someone who has been on the Internet for a considerable
amount of time and has experienced all of the changes that have occurred. Usually denotes
someone from the era of when bulletin boards were the prominent means of online
communication.
- netiquette -"network etiquette"- the common rules of politeness when on
the Internet.
- Newbie-A term commonly used regarding a new person or inexperienced user on the
Internet.
- Noddy-A useless program in of itself that is often used to test programming.
- Offline-Usually used on an open forum, it means to get off the computer and
engage the conversation privately. Also used to discuss later.
- parental units-Parents.
- PEBKAC-Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.
Code word used to refer to people who screw up and call help centers. The problem is with
the user not the equipment.
- pop-cultural anemic-A person who has learned most of their knowledge from books,
movies, comics, games, etc. and is unaware of how the real world operates.
- post-Columbine-The time period after the tragedy at Columbine High School and how
the media has imposed new standards to protect the youth of America.
- Queue-The British world for line, it has become quite common in the U.S. as it is
applied in computer terms, usually in the sense of placing things in a queue and
uploading/downloading all at once.
- Retcon-Short form "retroactive continuity and involves a new twist in the
storyline that changes the outcome that previous existed. One good example is how the
whole season of "Dallas" was just a dream.
- Speculator-A person who collects objects, usually cards, comics, toys, etc purely
for the belief that the collectibility factor will drive the items up in value.
- Steampunk-Science fiction setting where steam-based machines and equipment exist
but not electricity, even in a future setting. Used often in novels, comics, and games.
- Sturgeon's Law -Belief from science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon that
"90% of everything is crap."
- Technobabble -An attempt, usually to impress, by someone using technical jargon
to illustrate how intelligent they are.
- Tele-parables-Utilizing television shows to generate a system of morality and
common reference to what the situation was on that television show and how it was handled.
- Trainspotter-To describe a person who generally has good qualities but is
obsessed with a specific interest.
- Trekkie -A fan of Star Trek who has crossed the line into obsessiveness.
- Troll-Someone who posts on newsgroups in a deliberate attempt to incite feedback.
- upgrade fever-The almost uncontrollable desire to upgrade software or a computer
system even though it may not actually enhance the use.
- Webhippie-Someone who is totally into the new culture of the Web.
